A crown is a prosthetic replacement for missing or damaged tooth structure that cannot be replaced with a filling. A tooth that has a large filling and either breaks or fractures may need a crown. A tooth that has had a root canal usually but not always will need a crown.
Sometimes when doing cosmetic dentistry the best solution to achieve our goals is a crown. Crowns are also called caps. They can be made of various materials but the most common ones are gold, gold and porcelain or the newer all ceramic materials. What material to use can depend on function, location in the mouth, forces (grinder, clencher and esthetics).
Crowns usually take 2 visits and a temporary crown is made to be worn between these visits.
